By now the majority of us have come to realise that there is a lot more to health than what meets the eye. It's all well and good to have the chiselled abs, fastest 5km or strongest deadlift in the gym, but if you don't have control of whats going on within or upstairs (being the mind), are you really that healthy? Mental health and wellbeing is a key factor for happiness and success as well as growth and drive for the human endeavour. We can all say, or at least I can say from personal experience, when our mental health is at a weakened state other areas of our lives begin to suffer.
Like all areas of our health, our wellness needs to be worked on to make sure it stays at a healthy level. But what is wellness?
The World Health Organisation defines wellness as "...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease..."
We like to look at wellness as a constant process of betterment or drive from within to reach your true potential. It's a constant journey to find an optimal level of wellness and one that is almost impossible to perfect but is so crucial to live a high quality of life.

If you aren't already try some of these daily tasks and switch your mindset to work on your wellness...
Practice Gratitude Daily
Write down, say out loud or take a mental note of three things each day that you are grateful for! Start by saying or writing "I am Grateful for..." followed by the 3 three things in that moment that you are grateful for, it will take you less than 5 minutes. Practicing gratitude helps to remind us of the things that we have rather than focusing on the things we don't have.
Example: I am grateful for:
1. My family
2. A bed to sleep in
3. My health
Make a habit of this simple task and watch how your outlook on life goes from negative to positive!
Set Yourself Goals
Create a dream board, write them in your diary or even add them into the notes on your phone. Commit your goals to paper or whatever form you are noting them.
The first step to achieving your goals is to actually make them. Avoid living aimlessly, find your purpose and work on reaching your targets. Having goals gives us a path to pursue in life as well as a drive to continually improve our position.
Start with the big picture and work your way back to smaller more achievable goals until you find daily or weekly tasks you can achieve that will accumulate over time and chip away at until you reach your short term goals then your long term goal. Daily Tasks --> Weekly Task --> Short Term Goal --> Long Term Goal
Improvement Over Perfection
Live each day trying to get better than you were the day before. Personal development is an enormous part of the human condition and important for high levels of wellness.
Rather than seeking perfection, an unreachable destination, aim for improvement. If gradually each day you can make yourself better than the day before you will find enormous and sustainable motivation from within, improve your day to day life and live a life of fulfilment rather than desire.
Start small by maybe waking up a little earlier, trying to increase your daily activity or refining a skill each day. String as many improved days together as you can and watch what you can achieve in the long run.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and aware of the moment that you are currently in. In our day and age of endless notifications, stress and screen time it becomes increasingly difficult to be totally aware of ourselves and our surroundings. Setting aside 10-15 minutes out of your day to recenter, gather your thoughts and steady your breath helps us reduce the amount of time spent using our sympathetic nervous system (the system used to drive our fight or flight stress response). This can reduce our level of stress, help ease the mind and allow us to feel more relaxed as well as enjoy a better night sleep.
Not all mindfulness has to be meditation, try and find a method that suits you. Some examples might be:
- Watching the sunrise
- Going for a swim in the ocean
- Guided breathing
- Yoga
Like the muscles of our body, our mind needs to be constantly worked on too. These are just a few of many simple daily tasks you can do to improve your wellness and help to improve your happiness and quality of life.
